Bisibelabath/Sambar Sadam/Sambar Rice

IMG_1713This is a tasty and healthy rice and it’s a popular dish of Karnataka. You can do this when you have leftover rice too. You can make this easily and pack this as a lunch recipe for kids. The recipe is as follows

Preparation Time: 20minutes

Cooking Time: 25minutes

Ingredients:

  • Rice –1cup cooked
  • Toor Dal/Thuvaram Parupu -1/2cup
  • Tamarind Juice -1/2cup (Soak a small marble size tamarind in water and extract the juice)
  • Mixed Veggies –As your choice
  • Onion -1/4cup
  • Tomato -1
  • Sambar powder -1/2tsp
  • Turmeric powder/Manjal thool -1/4tsp
  • Asafoetida/Hing/Perunkayam -1/4tsp
  • Curry leaves –A spring
  • Red chilli -5
  • Channa Dal/Kadalai parupu -1tblsp
  • Coriander seeds/Malli -2tsp
  • Fenugreek/Venthayam -1/4tsp
  • Coconut gratings -2tblsp
  • Mustard seeds/kadugu -1tsp
  • Cumin seeds/Seerakam -1/2tsp
  • Salt -1tsp or as required
  • Oil -1tblsp or as required

Preparation:

  • Cook rice
  • Cook Toor dal
  • Extract Tamarind juice
  • Chop onion and tomato into small pieces

Procedure:

  • Pour oil in a pan
  • Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and onion and fry
  • Add tomato and fry till it becomes soft
  • Add tamarind water and boil
  • Add turmeric powder, sambar powder, hing and salt and boil
  • Add mixed veggies and boil
  • Add 1tsp oil in a pan and roast red chilli, channa dal, fenugreek, coriander and coconut and grind this in a mixer and add this and mix well
  • Mix this with rice and add toor dal and mix it well
  • Sambar Rice is now ready!!!

Step by Step Procedure:
