Spinach Sambar/Ponnangani Keerai Sambar

IMG_9736This is a healthy and tasty sambar made with spinach. You can use any type of spinach to do this. It can be taken with rice, idli and dosa. The recipe is as follows

Preparation Time: 15minutes

Cooking Time: 35minutes

Ingredients:

  • Toor Dal/Thuvaram Parupu -1/2cup
  • Spinach/Ponanganni keerai -1/2cup
  • Sambar Onion/Shallots -1/2cup
  • Mustard seeds/Kadugu -1tsp
  • Fenugreek/Venthayam -1/2tsp
  • Cumin seeds/Seerakam -1/4tsp
  • Green chilli -2
  • Tamarind Water -1cup (Soak lemon size tamarind in water and extract the juice)
  • Turmeric powder/Manjal thool -1tsp
  • Salt -1tsp or as required
  • Oil -2tblsp or as required

Preparation:

  • Chop onion into small pieces
  • Soak lemon size tamarind in water and extract the juice

Procedure:

  • Pressure cook toor dal with water for 4whistles in high flame and mash it
  • Pour oil in a pan
  • Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek and onion and fry
  • Add green chilli and fry well till onion becomes golden brown in color
  • Then add tamarind water and add salt and turmeric powder and boil well
  • Add spinach and boil well
  • Then add the cooked dal and boil
  • Ponanganni keerai Sambar is now ready!!!

Step by Step Procedure:

Pressure cook toor dal with water for 4whistles in high flame and mash it
