Bitter gourd Curry/Pavakkai Pulikulambu

IMG_9017This is a curry made with bitter gourd which goes well with rice, idli and dosa. The taste will be little bit bitter but it is very good for health. The recipe is as follows

Preparation Time: 15minutes

Cooking Time: 25minutes

Ingredients:

  • Bitter gourd/Pavakkai -1(medium sized)
  • Onion -1cup
  • Mustard seeds/Kadugu -1tsp
  • Cumin seeds/Seerakam -1tsp
  • Garlic -5pods
  • Curry leaf –A spring
  • Tamarind Water -1cup (Soak lemon size tamarind in water and extract the juice)
  • Sambar powder -2tblsp
  • Fennel powder/Sombu powder/Perunjeeraka powder -2tsp
  • Water -1/4cup
  • Salt -1tsp or as required
  • Oil -2tblsp or as required

Preparation:

  • Chop onion into small pieces
  • Wash and chop bitter gourd into small pieces
  • Soak lemon size tamarind in water and extract the juice

Procedure:

  • Pour oil in a pan
  • Add mustard seeds to it and after they crackle, add cumin seeds, garlic, curry leaves and onion and fry till onion becomes golden brown in color
  • Then add bitter gourd to it and fry well
  • Add tamarind water, sambar powder, fennel powder, salt and water and boil till the curry gets thick
  • Bitter gourd Curry is now ready!!!

Step by Step Procedure:
