Mochai PuliKulambu/Lima beans curry

IMG_8071This is a tasty and tangy curry which goes well with steamed rice, idli and dosa. This puli kulambu is made with dried mochai and so soaking is required. If you do this curry with fresh mochai then no soaking is required. The recipe is as follows

Preparation Time: 25minutes

Cooking Time: 30minutes

Ingredients:

  • Dried Lima Beans/Dried Mochai Payir -1/4cup
  • Shallots/Small onion -1/2cup
  • Tomato -1
  • Garlic -5 pods
  • Curry leaves –A spring
  • Red chilli powder/Milagai thool -2tsp
  • Turmeric powder/Manjal thool -1tsp
  • Fenugreek/Venthayam -1tsp
  • Tamarind Water -1/2cup (Soak lemon size tamarind in water and extract the juice)
  • Coconut -2tblsp
  • Water -1/2cup
  • Salt -2tsp or as required
  • Oil -3tblsp or as required

Preparation:

  • Soak lima beans/Mochai in water for 8-10hours
  • Grind coconut with water nicely
  • Soak lemon size tamarind in water and extract the juice
  • Chop onion and tomato into small pieces

Procedure:

  • Soak lima beans/Mochai in water for 8-10hours
  • Drain the water and pressure cook it for 3whsitles in high flame and in low flame for 15minutes by adding water
  • Pour oil in a pan
  • Add fenugreek, onion and garlic and fry
  • Add curry leaves and fry till onion becomes golden brown in color
  • Then add tomatoes and fry till it becomes soft
  • Add chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt and mix well
  • Then add tamarind water
  • Add water and allow it to boil in high flame till the raw smell leaves away
  • Then add grinded coconut and boil
  • Add boiled lima beans/mochai and mix well and boil
  • Lima beans/Mochai puli kulambu is now ready!!!

Step by Step Procedure:
