Tamarind Rice/Puliyotherai/Puliyogare/Puli sadam

IMG_7740This is a delicious South Indian dish which has a spicy tangy taste in it. This is an easy variety rice which can be prepared when you are in a hurry. If you have leftover food in the fridge, you can do variety rice like this and can have. This is an easy lunch recipe which you can prepare when you go for picnic or any outing.

Preparation Time: 15minutes

Cooking Time: 20minutes

Ingredients:

  • Cooked Rice -2cups
  • Channa Dal/Kadalai Parupu -2tblsp+2tsp
  • Red Chilli -2+2
  • Fenugreek/Venthayam -1tsp
  • Urad Dal/Ulutham Parupu -1tsp+1tsp
  • Pepper/Milagu -1tsp
  • Tamarind Water -1cup (Soak lemon size tamarind in water and extract the juice)
  • Mustard Seeds/Kadugu -1tsp
  • Asafoetida/Hing/Perunkayam -1tsp
  • Curry leaves –A spring
  • Turmeric Powder/Manjal podi -1tsp
  • Peanuts/Verkadalai-1 and 1/2tblsp
  • Water -1/4cup
  • Salt -2tsp or as required
  • Oil -1tblsp

For Roasting and Grinding:

  • Channa Dal/Kadalai Parupu -2tblsp
  • Red Chilli -2+2
  • Fenugreek/Venthayam -1tsp
  • Urad Dal/Ulutham Parupu -1tsp
  • Pepper/Milagu -1tsp

Roast these by pouring 2tsp oil and then grind it without adding water

Preparation:

  • Cook rice and keep aside
  • Soak lemon size tamarind in water and extract the juice out of it

Procedure:

  • Pour 2tsp oil in a pan
  • Add channa dal, red chilli, venthayam, urad dal and pepper and fry slightly and grind it without adding water
  • Pour oil in a pan
  • Add mustard seeds and after they crackle add red chilli, urad dal (1tsp), channa dal (2tsp), hing, curry leaf and fry
  • Add peanuts and fry
  • Then add tamarind water, turmeric powder, water, salt and boil till the raw smell goes away
  • Then add the grinded masala and boil
  • Then add rice and mix with it
  • Tamarind Rice is now ready!!!

Step by Step Procedure:
