Plantain Tamarind Curry/Vazhakai pulikulambu/Plantain Pulikulambu

IMG_8158This is a tasty curry which can be serves with steamed rice, idli and dosa. The preparation is very easy as it is done in pressure cooker. Plantains carry more vitamin A than bananas. They also provide adequate levels of minerals such as iron, magnesium, and phosphorous. Magnesium is essential for bone strengthening and has a cardiac-protective role as well. So plantains can be added in our diet in any form as we like

Preparation Time: 20minutes

Cooking Time: 30minutes

Ingredients:

  • Plantain/Vazhakai -1/2
  • Onion -100g
  • Garlic -5
  • Tomato -1
  • Red chilli powder/Milagai thool -2tsp
  • Coriander powder/Malli thool -2tsp
  • Turmeric powder/Manjal thool -1tsp
  • Salt -2tsp or as required
  • Tamarind water -1/4cup (Soak lemon size tamarind in water and extract the juice)
  • Water -1/2cup
  • Mustard seeds/Kadugu -1tsp
  • Urad Dal/Ulutham parupu -1/2tsp
  • Curry leaves –A spring
  • Oil -2tblsp or as required

Preparation:

  • Remove the skin from plantain and chop it into small pieces
  • Chop onion, tomato and garlic into small pieces
  • Soak lemon size tamarind in water and extract the juice

Procedure:

  • Pour oil in a cooker
  • Add onion and garlic and fry till onion becomes golden brown in color
  • Then add tomatoes and fry till it becomes soft
  • Then add chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and salt and mix well
  • Then add plantain and mix it well with the masala
  • Then pour tamarind water and add some water and boil for few minutes and then close the cooker and pressure cook for 3whistles in high flame and in low flame for ten minutes
  • Pour oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, urad dal and curry leaves and fry and pour it over the curry
  • Plantain Curry is now ready!!!
