Homemade Idli/Dosa Batter

IMG_8902This is a homemade idli/dosa batter recipe for beginners in cooking. The ratio of Urad dal and rice is 1:4. The preparation of batter involve three steps: soaking, grinding and fermenting. This gives a tasty and crispy dosa. You have to soak rice for 2-3 hours and urad dal for 1-2hours. While grinding urad dal if you add ice water the batter will be so soft and fluffy.

Ingredients:

  • Idli Rice/Idli arisi -4cups
  • Urad dal/Ulutham parupu -1cup
  • Fenugreek Seeds/Venthayam -1tsp
  • Salt -2tsp or as required
  • Water –As required

Preparation:

  • Wash and soak Idli rice for 2-3hours
  • Wash and soak urad dal for 1-2hours

Procedure:

  • Wash and soak Idli rice for 2-3hours
  • Wash and soak urad dal alond with fenugreek for 1-2hours
  • Grind urad dal in a grinder for 25minutes by adding required water. You can use cold water while grinding to get soft and fluffy batter
  • Then pour it into a container
  • Grind idli rice in grinder for 30minutes by adding required water
  • Then pour it into a container and add salt and mix it with urad dal and mix it well with your hand and allow to ferment for 8-10 hours
  • Then the batter will rise by itself and you can now use it for making idli and dosa
  • Idli/Dosa Batter is now ready!!!

Step by Step Procedure:
