Dry Fish Curry/Karuvadu Thokku

IMG_8124This is a popular Tamilnadu recipe which tastes delicious and tastes best with rice, idli and dosa. This can be made easily and tastes very nice. The dry fish can be cooked in many ways but this is a simple and easy thokku. This dry fish curry tastes best with papad and steamed rice. While cooking dry fish see for salt and add accordingly as the dry fish has salt already.

Preparation Time: 15minutes

Cooking Time: 40minutes

Ingredients:

  • Any Dry Fish/Karuvadu -150gms (I used Vanjara Karuvadu)
  • Fennel Seeds/Sombu/Perunjeerakam -2tsp
  • Green Chilli -3
  • Small Onion/Shallots -25
  • Tomato -1
  • Red chilli powder/Milagai thool -1tblsp or as required
  • Coriander powder/Malli thool -2tsp
  • Turmeric powder/Manjal thool -1tsp
  • Salt -2tsp or as required
  • Oil -2tblsp

Preparation:

  • Chop onion and tomato
  • Wash dry fish in water well to get rid of the mud

Procedure:

  • Pour oil in a pan
  • Add sombu and after it crackles add green chilli and fry
  • Then add small onion and fry till it becomes golden brown in color
  • Then add tomatoes and fry till it becomes soft and the raw smell goes away
  • Then add chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and salt and fry
  • Then add the washed dry fish and fry in low flame for 20minutes
  • After it gets cooked switch off the flame
  • Dry Fish thokku is now ready!!!

Step by Step Procedure:
