Chettinadu Fish Curry With Coconut/Chettinadu meen kulambu/Chettinadu Fish Kulambu

IMG_8097This is a popular South Indian dish which can be made with any fish. This tasty Chettinadu fish curry with coconut tastes best with rice, idli and dosa. It tastes very well on the next day of preparation. This spicy flavorful curry can be prepared easily. We can prepare freshly grounded masala first and then add it to the curry.

Preparation Time: 15minutes

Cooking Time: 30minutes

Ingredients:

  • Any Fish -1/2kg (I used Paarai Fish)
  • Big Onion -2+1
  • Tomato -1+1
  • Mustard seeds/Kadugu -1tsp
  • Fennel seeds/Sombu/Perunjeerakam -1tblsp
  • Garlic -5 pods
  • Red chilli powder/Milagai thool -1tblsp or as required
  • Coriander powder/Malli thool -2tblsp
  • Turmeric powder/Manjal thool -1tsp
  • Coconut -1/4cup
  • Tamarind juice -1/2cup (Soak a lemon sized tamarind in hot water and extract the juice)
  • Curry leaves –A spring
  • Coriander leaves -2springs
  • Salt -1tblsp or as required
  • Oil -2tblsp+1tblsp

For Grinding:

  • Coconut -1/4cup

Preparation:

  • Chop garlic, onion and tomato
  • Soak a lemon sized tamarind in hot water and extract the juice

Procedure:

  • Pour 1tblsp oil in a pan
  • Add sombu and after it crackles, add garlic, one onion finely chopped and fry till onion becomes golden brown in color
  • Then add one tomato chopped finely and fry well till it becomes soft and the raw smell goes away
  • Then add chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric power and mix well
  • Then add grated coconut and mix well
  • Grind this in a mixer to a smooth masala by adding water
  • Pour 2tblsp oil in a pan
  • After oil gets heated add mustard seeds and after it crackles add two onion chopped finely, curry leaves and fry till onion becomes golden brown in color
  • Then add one tomato chopped finely and fry till it becomes soft and the raw smell goes away
  • Then add tamarind water, salt and boil for 5minutes
  • Then add the grounded masala and mix well and add water and boil well
  • Then add fish and boil well till it reaches a kulambu consistency
  • Then add coriander leaves and switch off the flame
  • Chettinadu Fish Curry with Coconut is now ready!!!
