Chayote Dal Fry/Chow Chow Dal Fry

IMG_8627This is a simple and a tasty fry which goes well as a side dish with rice. The preparation is very simple and it it’s healthy too. Like the tomato, chow chow is actually a fruit that is used as a vegetable. It is small and pale green, resembling a large pear. It adds fiber to our diet. So it can be cooked in any form as you like and can be added to our diet.

Preparation Time: 10minutes

Cooking Time: 25minutes

Ingredients:

  • Chayote/Chow chow -1
  • Moong Dal/Pasi parupu =1/4cup
  • Coconut -1/4cup
  • Green chilli -2
  • Fennel Seeds/Sombu/Perunjeerakam -1tsp
  • Turmeric powder/Manjal thool -1tsp
  • Mustard Seeds/Kadugu -1tsp
  • Cumin seeds/Seerakam -1/2tsp
  • Curry leaves –A spring
  • Salt -1tsp or as required
  • Oil -1tblsp

For Grinding:

  • Coconut -1/4cup
  • Green chilli -2
  • Fennel Seeds/Sombu/Perunjeerakam -1tsp

Grind this coarsely without adding water

Preparation:

  • Remove the skin from chow chow and chop it into small pieces
  • Grind coconut, fennel seeds, and green chilli coarsely without adding water

Procedure:

  • Remove the skin from chow chow and chop it into small pieces
  • Pressure cook chow chow along with moong dal by adding water and turmeric powder and keep for 3whistles in high flame and in low flame for five minutes
  • Grind coconut, fennel seeds, and green chilli coarsely without adding water
  • Then open the cooker and add this grinded mixture and mix well
  • Pour oil in a pan
  • Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and curry leaves to it and pour it over the fry and mix well
  • Chow Chow Fry is now ready!!!

Step by Step Procedure:
