Bottle gourd Thokku/Sorakkai Thokku

IMG_6584Bottle gourd Thokku is a tasty side dish for rice. It is easy to prepare. Bottle gourd is a very healthy vegetable with high water content which makes our body cool, quenches thirst and easy to digest. It is a valuable medicine for excessive thirst due to diarrhea and diabetes. It is also used in the treatment of stomach acidity and indigestion. Bottle gourd is rich in fibre. It should be taken in a cooked form and should not be eaten raw as it can harm the stomach.

Preparation Time: 25minutes

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • Bottle gourd -1/2
  • Mustard seeds/Kadugu -1/2tsp+1/2tsp
  • Fenugreek/Venthayam -1/2tsp
  • Coriander powder/Dhaniya thool/Kothamalli thool -1/2tsp
  • Cumin seeds powder/seerakam thool -1/2tsp
  • Cumin seeds/Seerakam -1/4tsp
  • Chilli powder/Milagai thool -1tblsp
  • Turmeric powder/Manjal thool -1/2tsp
  • Tamarind Juice -2tblsp
  • Asafoetida/Hing/Perunkayam thool -1/4tsp
  • Salt -1tsp or as needed
  • Sugar -1/2tsp
  • Oil -1tblsp or as needed

For grinding:

  • Mustard seeds/Kadugu -1/2tsp
  • Fenugreek/venthayam -1/2tsp

Dry fry this without adding oil and grind this to a fine paste by adding coriander powder and cumin powder and by adding water

Preparation: 

  • Wash bottle gourd and cut it and remove the seeds in it and chop it into fine pieces and keep
  • Grind everything given under “for grinding” and keep
  • Take the juice out of tamarind and keep

Procedure:

  • Pour oil in a pan
  • After oil gets heated add mustard seeds
  • After it gets spluttered add cumin seeds, asafoetida and fry
  • Add bottle gourd and fry
  • Then add the tamarind juice and mix well
  • Then add chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt and allow to boil
  • Add the grinded paste and mix well
  • Add sugar and mix well in low flame for few minutes
  • Bottle gourd Thokku is now ready!!!

Step by Step Procedure:

Wash bottle gourd and cut it and remove the seeds in it
